A discipline not practiced by many today is memorizing Scripture. Let me invite you to consider memorizing Isaiah 9:1-7 with me. I am currently working on this text and encouraging my church family to memorize it too. If there are small children in your home choose a simple, helpful verse or portion of a verse to memorize. Work on this individually and check each other in the family or with church family.
The following is a method I adopted several years ago.
Day One: Read Isaiah 9:1 out loud ten times, looking at each word as if photographing it with your eyes. Then cover the verse and recite it ten times. You’re done for the day.
Day Two: Day One’s verse first. Recite yesterday’s verse, Isaiah 9:1, ten times. Look at the verse if you need to, just to refresh your memory. Next, do the new verse. Read Isaiah 9:2 out loud ten times, looking at each word as if photographing it with your eyes. Then cover the page and recite that verse ten times. You’re done for the day.
Day Three: Day Two’s verse first. Recite Isaiah 9:2 ten times. Look at the verse to refresh your memory as needed. Old verses next, altogether: Recite Isaiah 9:1-2 together one time. On to the new verse, read Isaiah 9:3 out loud ten times, looking at each word as if photographing it with your eyes. Cover the page and recite Isaiah 9:3 ten times. You’re done for the day.
Day Four: Day Three’s verse first. Recite Isaiah 9:3 ten times. Look at the verse only to refresh your memory. Old verses next: Recite Isaiah 9:1-3 together one time. Now, do the new verse. Read Isaiah 9:4 out loud ten times looking at each word as if photographing it with your eyes. Cover the page and recite Isaiah 9:4 ten times. You’re done for the day.
Day Five: Day Four’s verse first. Recite Isaiah 9:4 ten times. Look at the verse only to refresh your memory. Old verses next: Recite Isaiah 9:1-4 together one time. Now, do the new verse. Read Isaiah 9:5 out loud ten times looking at each word as if photographing it with your eyes. Cover the page and recite Isaiah 9:5 ten times. You’re done for the day.
Day Six & beyond: Continue in the above pattern, adding a verse a day until you reach the last verse.
Let me know how it’s going.
Here is a well reasoned explanation for how and why to memorize Scripture: http://gethsemane.weebly.com/uploads/1/6/7/8/1678228/scripture_memory_booklet_ebookinpdf.com.pdf
