Call To Prayer

Early this morning (TimesNews), Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Anthony Kennedy, issued a temporary block on yesterday’s ruling to over rule Idaho’s defense of marriage. This ruling is only temporary and appears to be only a formality in the judicial process.

But this is the day that the Lord has made. Church, don’t miss this moment. This moment is not our moment to shout a victory, this is our moment to gather in humility at the church-house and pray. Even though many don’t see the church of the Lord Jesus the Christ as relevant, we have been given the moment by our Lord.

This is a call to all born again believers to prayer. I’m calling in the Lord’s people of Eastside Baptist Church to gather at 6:30 p.m. tonight. I’m calling upon husbands and fathers to gather your family this evening during the evening devotion/worship time to prayer for the sanctity of marriage in the state of Idaho.

Church, if there is ever a day to cry out in repentance it is while it is still called today.

This is not a day of reprieve, this is a day of spiritual battle.

1 To You I lift up my eyes,
O You who are enthroned in the heavens!
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
So our eyes look to the LORD our God,
Until He is gracious to us.
3 Be gracious to us, O LORD, be gracious to us,
For we are greatly filled with contempt.
4 Our soul is greatly filled
With the scoffing of those who are at ease,
And with the contempt of the proud.
(Psalms 123:1-4 NASB)

For the Furtherance of the Gospel

God sovereignly and supernaturally supervises all seasons of suffering in our lives for His glory for the furtherance of the Gospel and the encouragement of other believers.

Join me on September 26, 2014 at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship in Twin Falls, Idaho at noon as churches gather together to pray for pastor Saeed and the persecuted church. May the Gospel go forth.

“…that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else,  and that most of the brethren , trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment , have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.” (Phil 1:13-14 NASB)

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol , behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
Even there Your hand will lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me,
And the light around me will be night,”
Even the darkness is not dark to You,
And the night is as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are alike to You.”
(Psalm 139:7-12 NASB)

Two Questions I’m Never Asked

The phone rings and the caller asks… “I’m looking for a new church and I have a few questions to ask about your church.” I try my best to respond with kindness. I think the caller will soon be asking some questions with sincerity so I try to be as helpful as I can.

I can almost predict the questions. They will go something like this..

  • “What time does your worship service start?” I respond by telling them first of all on Sunday mornings we have a bible study for everyone at 9:15 followed by our corporate worship service at 10:30AM
  • “What kind of music do you have?” I respond by saying that we strive to use music that speaks of the holiness of God and man’s great need for Him.
  • The next set of questions are music related, always….
  • “OK, but what kind of music is that? Do you use a hymn book?” my reply, “Yes we sing songs from hymn books.”
  • sometimes the question is “do you have a drum set?”

If I make it through the music questions without a dial tone, I’m usually then asked about children and youth ministry.

  • “Do you have children’s church?”
  • “Do you have an active youth group?”
  • “Do you have AWANA?”

These are fair questions. After all the church culture has conditioned us to think like this when we talk about church. As I commence explaining this to the caller about how we do children and youth ministry, I get what I’ve learned to describe as confused silence. It’s a distinct sound on the phone. It’s hard to explain really, but the caller usually comes to some kind of understanding of what I’ve just tried to explain.

But two questions I don’t hear asked by the callers strike me as most complex.

Maybe they don’t ask because they’ve already done their research and visited our website and know the answer to these unasked questions (then again, if they’ve visited our website they would know the answer to most of their questions they’ve been asking.)

These two questions have unique things to say about the nature of the caller, what people have grown to think about the local church, and what the weekly prayer gathering has become.

  • First: I’ve am rarely asked what I believe about God. I’ve been asked about what translation I preach from or if I’m a Calvinist or not. I’m usually asked how long the preaching service goes, but rarely (by rarely I mean I can recall one caller a few years ago that inquired beyond preferences of style and length of services) have I ever been asked if I believe in the God of the bible. (It’s likely they have some kind of idea.)
  • Second: I can say with a high level of certainty that I have never been asked, “What time do your prayer gatherings start?” But then again, many of the regular attendees couldn’t even answer that question.

I pray for a day when those are the two most asked questions. But so long as church continues to be viewed as a consumer product to be decided by what man thinks as most important then I will continue expecting that these questions will rarely be asked.

So, since you’ve read this far, let me go ahead and let you know what time our prayer gathering starts. Wednesday nights at 6:30PM. We gather, read some Scripture and pray.

A Plan for Gathering With the Church this Weekend

Earlier today I posted 5 Easy Steps to Avoid Gathering with the Church this Weekend. Hopefully you picked up on the satire and won’t follow those 5 easy steps. Now I want to offer a better plan for you. One that I believe will actually be a blessing to you and not a curse.

In the home I grew up in it was never a question of gathering with the church. It was the plan as we left on Sunday night that we would gather on Wednesday to pray together and then again the coming Lord’s Day, unless hindered by an act of God (and that rarely, and I mean rarely, happened). One of the best things you can do for yourself and your family is to establish an atmosphere that this household gathers with other households as often as possible to pray, study the bible and worship together.

Weekly At Eastside Baptist, we try to help you with ideas on how to do this with information in the bulletin. A bulletin you say? You know, that piece of paper you are handed by the ushers every Sunday. Yes, that weekly publication filled with typos and grossly misspelled words. It can be much more than a mindless document that you don’t give much attention to. There are things in it that will help you plan to gather with the Lord’s people.

  • Schedule of opportunities to gather with believers
    • Sunday mornings: 9:15AM Bible Study, 10:30AM worship gathering
    • Sunday afternoon/evening: This is different most weeks so notice the location and times (for example, this week we will gather at 5PM in Rogerson, Idaho with our extended church family for pot-luck and fellowship)
    • Wednesday evening: 6:30PM every week we gather for prayer.
  • Scripture Memory: The bulletin has information about suggested Scripture that many are working on memorizing.
  • Catechism Question: Every week there is a new question with answer with biblical prof. Right now we are working on examining the Ten Commandments.
  • Sermon Notes: The bulletin offers a place to write down observations about the sermon. This will help you recall what was taught on the previous week and help you in preparing for the coming week. I generally preach chapter to chapter, verse to verse. This make it rather easy to know what will be examined the coming Lord’s Day. These sermon notes may help generate discussion with your family throughout the week.
  • Other opportunities are promoted in the bulletin that you may want to consider as supplemental to your weekly preparation for gathering with the church on purpose.
  • The monthly prayer guide and calendar can help you stay connected with the entire church family, pick one up this week when you gather with the saints.

May the Lord bless your efforts as you plan and plan on gathering with the believers this week.

Interview with Naghmeh

Today, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention released this recent interview with Naghmeh Abedini, wife of US citizen and pastor, Saeed Abedini, imprisoned in Iran for Gospel related work.

I’m thankful to have this moment to remind you of the plight of Idaho pastor, Saeed Abedini.

Naghmeh provided the following brief statement:

As Christians we know that nothing is more powerful than the power of prayer. But as Christians we are also called to speak out and take action on injustices happening around us. My husband, Pastor Saeed Abedini, is an American citizen imprisoned illegally in Iran and being tortured and abused because of his Christian faith.  He needs your prayers. Our family asks you to stand with us and contact your local government officials to voice your concern about pastor Saeed and Christian persecution around the world. In Hebrews 13:3 we are told to remember those in prison as if imprisoned with them.

A New Ride is Needed

DSCF8736

Nearly two years ago David and Emily were married in Topeka, KS. Emily’s sister, Katie (see photo, Katie is sitting in the wheelchair) is close to Emily’s heart and always of interest to me as I pray for David and Emily. I’m very selective about causes I support. This one is close to me because it’s close to David and Emily.

Katie’s mom (see photo, Cheri is standing on the left) is an example of a mom who lives out her days to give of herself for Katie’s sake.

Recently, their 1990 van has quit working. They are in the process of looking for a new one, and this is the reason of this post. Would you join me in praying to God, asking that he meet this great need. There is no inexpensive car today, especially one that is customized for a special need as this.

Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, would you pray with me and Katie’s family? The family has put a plan together in asking for donations from generous people online. I’m praying that God will provide this need as they have established this plan. I’m praying with their family, that God would provide this vehicle for Katie.

This is Emily’s request she posted on Facebook yesterday:

Hello friends of mine! Please read this: it’s about my sister.
I have a serious request in regards to my sweet sister, Katie. My sister is mentally and physically handicapped and depends on her wheelchair to be mobile. Which puts her in the position of depending on her wheelchair accessible van to go to the hospital or anywhere else outside of her neighborhood. Her van stopped working completely this week. She needs a van, aside from not wanting to be stuck at home all the time, she gets very sick often and needs to make frequent trips to the hospital to avoid getting pneumonia despite my mom’s restless efforts. If you would donate even a little, it would help me to know that my sister is a little closer to the safety of being transported for medical attention when needed. Know that my mother would not ask unless it were crucial and whatever is given will be used for the good of my precious sister. Love you guys! Thank you!

Here is their request as it is posted HERE:

Katie needs a wheelchair accessible van right away, because her 1990 conversion van seems to have seen its last days. Katie is 25 years old, and is chronically ill. She has a rare disease along with Cerebral Palsy, and the last 18 months or so she has had to be rushed to the hospital over a dozen times…usually late at night and sometimes very, very ill.

The van Katie currently has is not even starting, and we don’t know if it can be fixed or not. It has no AC at all; it has poor heat, and the windows are all falling in (seriously, the window seals are broken!); it leaks around the roof conversion and the windows, so there is a lot of water damage inside; it is simply falling apart.

If we raise some money but not a lot, we’ll use the money to fix the 1990 Chevy and see how long we can make it last, but I don’t know if we can get it going again. We really just need to replace it, and have found several options for just under $20,000, which are already converted with wheelchair accessibility.

Katie’s mom (that’s me, Cheri) runs her own business, but mostly is Katie’s full-time caretaker and can’t work a full-time professional job, so the money just is not there to go buy a new vehicle. We need help, and we need it quickly! Katie can never go out of town because her van has been unreliable, but now she can’t even go to church on Sunday or go across town! Even if all you can do is $10, or $10 a month to help with any loan we have to get, if 20 people gave $10 a month we might be able to afford payments on something….What a blessing and miracle that would be for us, and for Katie’s enjoyment and safety!

We may have about $3000 earned through some charitable organizations…But most people stop helping “kids” after they turn 18 or 21, and there are only 3 or 4 organizations that will help at all. We really need our friends to help out if they can.

Thank You!! for taking the time to read this. We appreciate you all!

He Is Able

Likely you will notice the social media blitz and the hash-tags #freesaeed appearing throughout the day. Be sure of this, ‘truth is lacking’ in most political offices in our land today. The Lord is indeed displeased that there is no justice. But wait, don’t count what appears to be slowness on the Lord’s part as His abandonment of justice.

For His own arm brings salvation, He looks for no other but Himself. He is clothed in His righteousness so that we might see His glory. He has put on garments of vengeance and wrapped Himself with zeal.

How will the Lord’s people respond today? Like those three brave Hebrew young men when jeered by the king “and what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?” Arise church, arise. We do not need to give answer concerning this matter. “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver.” (Daniel 3)

Yes, truth is lacking;
And he who turns aside from evil makes himself a prey.
Now the Lord saw,
And it was displeasing in His sight that there was no justice.
And He saw that there was no man,
And was astonished that there was no one to intercede;
Then His own arm brought salvation to Him,
And His righteousness upheld Him.
He put on righteousness like a breastplate,
And a helmet of salvation on His head;
And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing
And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.

Isaiah 59:15-17 (NASB)

Hebrews 13:3 Day

SaeedThere are many around the nation (USA) who are setting December 4 aside to put the face of Boise pastor, Saeed Abedini, back in front of the American people. I too will be joining the massive social media day of awareness.

Like many of you, several people have sent me Facebook invites, Twitter announcements, blogging tips expressing a hope to remind our countrymen that one of our own still remains behind bars in an Iranian prison.

I’ve reflected on this issue before, and I’ll continue expressing concern.

I welcome you to join me in this media blitz on Wednesday, December 4, 2013.

There will likely be different motives behind many who will participate in the day so let me clarify what I’ll be doing, why, and what I’m inviting you to do.

What I’m doing:

  • First of all, (at risk of sounding self-pious) I intend to deny my flesh the comfort of food for 24 hours, sundown on 12/3 to sundown on 12/4.
  • I will set my alarm clock for 2AM (12/4), rise out of my comfortable bed, go to my knees and plead my case before the Heavenly Father, again.
  • Throughout the day, as the craving for food calls for satisfaction, I will intentionally resist my flesh and cry out to Jehovah for Saeed Abedini. (I’ll also pray generally for all suffering saints in chains)
  • The only internet activity I will participate in is to periodically post a link to this blog post for the duration of the 24 hours.
  • the prayer meeting at the meetinghouse of Eastside Baptist church will be devoted to praying for Saeed at 6:30PM on 12/4.

Why I’m doing what I’m doing:

  • Scripture directs me how to think of believers who are in prison for living gospel saturated lives as if I were a prisoner at their side and to think of all who suffer as if I was the one suffering.  (Hebrews 13:3)
  • Scripture also teaches me to place my cause before God. Maybe God will direct a secular government to do His work but I will plead this cause to the Almight God who “does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.” (Job 5:8-9 NASB)
  • in this pop-culture, celebrity fascination day we live in, so few believers even take the time to consider the suffering saints “exposed to the test of public mockery and flogging, and to the torture of being left bound in prison” (Hebrews 11:36). God has something better planned for their day.
  • My self-centered, selfish, unchecked nature knows nothing of self denial and must learn that it is subject to the Spirit of God. This can’t be done unless God helps.

What I’m inviting you to consider doing with me:

  • join me from sundown (12/3) to sundown (12/4) and refrain from the comfort of food.
  • wake up at 2AM and pray.
  • resist the flesh and obey the Spirit as you pray throughout the day.
  • resist engaging anyone in social media during the stated hours.
  • Share this post on your social networks inviting believers to join together.
  • join your church on December 4 to pray for Saeed.
  • any combination of the above.

Many may be motivated by outrage that our government does so little. Some will launch campaigns to powerful politicians.  Some will enlist a celebrity endorsement from someone in the entertainment industry. As for me, I’ll ask God to help me think like Job; “I would seek God, and I would place my cause before God; Who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.” (Job 5:8-9 NASB)

Prayer Meeting?

What ever happened to the gathering of the saints called ‘the prayer meeting’?

Many (I should really say most) in the church in America would be quick to blame the downfall of America on the removal of prayer from public school. I think there are legitimate and historic parallels to how America was in general before 1963 (50 years ago) and how things are today. But what would a believer from another country think has happened to prayer at the church house if he were looking for a place and time to gather to pray tonight?

When I examine the attendance at nearly any prayer meeting in many churches, it might even appear as if freedom to gather to pray has been removed from the church house. Not from the state, not that it’s illegal, not that there is danger of attendees losing property if they show up to pray, it’s really like many professing believers have abandoned this beautiful privilege altogether and replaced it with Wednesday night school sponsored events, network and/or cable programming, or the internet forum debating the doctrines of God while we disobey His command to be devoted to prayer.

The western church has largely replaced her mid-week prayer meeting with burdensome programming that puts a strain on church budgets and performance expectations on staff members if numbers drop from the event.

If there is anything that is most alarming to me since the supreme court abolished state sponsored prayer in 1963 is that the church has exchanged the power of God for a fan powered bounce house.

Did you hear what I just said? Not about the bounce house; What evangelical Christian would want a state sponsored prayer anyway? Isn’t that part of why America became America, so we would not be forced to participate in state sponsored religion?

Don’t get me wrong; it is a tragedy that the American public rarely humbles themselves for prayer. That 1963 supreme court ruling has been a battleground issue for many conservative Americans while at the same time the church house began hearing crickets during the prayer meetings of the free church.

American Christians have forgotten to anticipate God’s pouring out of His Spirit among us. He may just decide to pour out His Spirit tonight for the last time in our land… You don’t want to miss that, do you?

Oh, if only God’s people would humble themselves…
